🎨 Dyes & pigmentsHow to remove grass stains

Chlorophyll pigment + protein · alcohol and enzymes

The green on knees from a fall on the lawn, or on the seat of your pants after sliding off the picnic blanket, is a stain mixing plant pigments like chlorophyll with protein. It's common on kids' clothes and sportswear, and a regular wash tends to leave a pale green mark.

🔬 Why this order works

Chlorophyll dissolves better in alcohol than in water, and enzyme detergent breaks down the protein in grass juice. Use both together and it comes out well.

🧺 Step by step

Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.

👕 By fabric

⚪ White cotton & linen

Enzyme detergent → alcohol → oxygen bleach gets almost all of it out.

🎨 Colors & synthetics

Enzyme detergent → alcohol (after testing) → wash.

🧶 Wool, silk & cashmere

Don't use enzyme detergent on wool or silk; take them to a dry cleaner.

🚫 Don't

  • Hot water from the start.
  • Using the dryer while a stain remains.

⏳ If it has already dried

Dried grass stains also come out well if you apply enzyme detergent and let it sit for at least 30 minutes.

💡 Tip

For clothes that get grass stains often, like baseball or soccer uniforms, just applying enzyme detergent on game day makes a big difference.

❓ Common questions

The grass stains on white baseball pants won't come out no matter how many times I wash them.

Grass stains only come out when you treat the protein with enzyme detergent and the pigment with alcohol separately. Before washing, apply enzyme detergent and leave it for at least 1 hour, dab any remaining green with alcohol, then try soaking in oxygen bleach.

Can't I use hot water on grass stains?

The protein in grass juice can cook onto the fibers. Pre-treat in cold to lukewarm water, and use a temperature the garment can take at the washing stage.

What about pollen stains?

Brushing it off with your hand rubs it in and stains. Lift the powder off with tape, rinse in cold water, then treat any remaining color the same way as grass stains.

What about jeans I sat on the grass in?

Denim follows the same order. But alcohol and bleach can also remove denim's indigo, so test on the inside before using them.
